Official UX Minecraft Server?
Some of the most fun I've had in Minecraft SMP was JumpingSNIPA's server back in March/April. There was so much to do and it was only what, beta 1.5? Plenty has changed since then, especially the last 3 updates. (1.8 probably added more features than 1-1.7 combined!)
With the full release of the game, several of us thought it'd be great if we could get another UX Minecraft server started. We know some members are capable of hosting such a large group of players, however, the server cannot be up 24/7 (not to mention the required computer knowledge of actually running the server and installing mods.)
Where does that leave us? Paid dedicated server.
Many sites offer very reasonable priced servers because some are dedicated to only Minecraft. Check out www.TreePuncher.com We create a custom plan and they set everything up, even mods! Best thing about it is it will be up 24/7!
I estimate we will pay $25-$32 a month depending on how many people we'll have on at the same time. It's even possible to pay only $17, but 10 players would be the limit. Assuming we do get a server, there will be high interest at first and everyone will be on at the same time. After a month I believe the interest will stay about the same, but less people will be on at the same time and we can lower the monthly fee by eliminating wasted player slots.
Here's the list of everyone I know that has the game (21 total):
ElMexiCan915
MrKurt
Tophat
Knoxville
Meatshield
Garquin
masta shef
ApocalypseVVolf
SirManGuyDude
Sgt zombie
JumpingSNIPA
Kz Pwned
Desert Sleepy
Super Mega King
NegativeHunter
Founda kiwi
Redrumsalad
Flasktoss
slacker hero
Namorg
soggywaffle
I highly doubt we will all be on at the same time most of the time, especially since we hardly see a few of those members online anyway.
I'm aiming for an East Coast, 15 player slot, Bukkit support(mods), with port 25565($2 extra), server which comes out to a total of $24.50 monthly. If we eliminate mods and the port(if not needed) the price is only $15, and then of course we can lower the player limit if desired. Also a few of us were talking about keeping the server private for mainly people on that list above. (we dont want random members)
All we need to do is set up a donation box and see how much we can raise. If we get enough money we can discuss what kind of server we would like to start off with, which we can easily change at anytime.

Where can I send my money?
I'm joking of course. But seriously, how are we going to gather the money? I've been trying to set up a bank account, and will probably have it by next year. After that, how does it work? Will you just give me a number and I'll "wire" it to you or something? I think I can donate at least 40 dollars, maybe more. I'm hoping some of the other players you listed will have an interest in this too, as I'd love to get this going. My only request would be that the maps include mountains or plateaus. And also be done in the modern Minecraft, 1.8 or whatever, as that's what I'm used to doing.
I guess you should just count the number of players with an interest in playing this and then sum up however many people pledge to donate. Since you started the topic I'm assuming you plan on donating something. I plan on donating something.

I'm willing to pay for a server.
Why don't we just pay for a full year/six months for a server in full?

Thats what i said ... just pay for 1 year. During that year we slowly raise the money to pay for the next year in case we decide to keep playing a year later.
Also Meatshield said to pay for a server, and not a minecraft specific server due to it costing less.

what?
If someone had a good enough computer they could run it 24/7. I know I can possibly run it for a long time. But 24/7, no. I think that paying for a dedicated server however much would be a waste of money even though we can just make a server like mine, or better.

How could someone run a server, and how good would the computer need to be? Because I recently bought a new computer, and my internet connection's been great on MineCraft. Also, I rarely turn my computer off.

Alright, despite the fact that I have no clue what I'm doing and am basically stumbling through this like a blind person, I'm in the process of making a server. I pretty much just looked up how to make a minecraft server, and am at the point of editing the properties of the server. I've got these options:
#Minecraft server properties
#Sun Dec 04 21:07:33 EST 2011
allow-nether=true
level-name=world
allow-flight=false
enable-query=false
server-port=25565
enable-rcon=false
level-seed=
server-ip=
white-list=false
spawn-animals=true
online-mode=true
pvp=true
difficulty=1
gamemode=0
max-players=20
spawn-monsters=true
view-distance=10
motd=A Minecraft Server
Alright, so I'm guessing diffculty 1 is either peaceful or easy. I want difficulty on normal, so should I change that? I see it's already spawning monsters. I'm guessing motd is message of the day, so it should be harmless for me to make that whatever I like, right? Do I need to put anything into server-ip or level-seed? What is white list and rcon? Is gamemode 0 creative or survival? Does view distance matter? Can I rename the level under level-name?
EDIT: I've also created the network "DesertSleepy" on LogMeInHamachi, with the password "desert". I think that's how you join, right?

We'll set up an official paypal or something, I'm sure someone in the community is an expert in online purchases

Any Server we host will be up to date. You can find maps here http://www.minecraftforum.net/forum/50-seeds/

Slacker Hero wrote:Why don't we just pay for a full year/six months for a server in full?
I'm not sure we'll play for that long because some people might just play the xbox version when it comes out only because they can either run it better or want to play with others who can't run the pc version
Tophat 44 wrote:Also Meatshield said to pay for a server, and not a minecraft specific server due to it costing less.
Right, I want us to find the best server but with a regular server we need people who know how to install mods
Desert Sleepy wrote:How could someone run a server, and how good would the computer need to be? Because I recently bought a new computer, and my internet connection's been great on MineCraft. Also, I rarely turn my computer off.
I'm all for someone hosting a server if they can keep it up most of the time, install mods, and hold around 15 or more players without lag

I think I've got a server running right now, I just need someone to test it with me. I was able to join after entering the proper info (you need hamachi thing, then put in 5.221.49.212:25565). I need to see if other players can also join this server.
If you join my network thing listed above, I'm hoping it'll work. Can either You or Kiwi or somebody else who already knows how to do it give it a try? I'd love to see if it works.

For 20+ people, or even 10+ people, 24/7 would be a home server. No doubt. Which, evidently cost around $3000-$10000 and possibly a degree in network management. You can build ones with a couple $200 computers over time but, like I said, you would want either a BS in network management or a trouble shooting guide tattooed on your arms. A simple 2-3 person server can easily be hosted by any mid-grade PC for extended use (12 hours, I suggest, is the max). However, the PC would could not be in use for that period of time that the server is up. Even a high end pc that is LANed could hold about 12+ with a lag and I don't know why you would even try.
So, unless someone wants to cough up a couple grand for us, a UX lobby would need to be outsourced. This site seems great however, I am confused as to the port and two different mods. Also, for 20 players, with a mod, for a year is $306 which is $15.60 per person. If we all stop playing, our investment of $15 will be lost, which isn't that big of deal for me. So, I feel annual is the best for us.

Server
I can run my server, quite a long time with no lag as I am told. As long as I don't join., though. Joining causes lag for me and in turn lag for them. I would be more than willing to host my server every day for around 9 hours from 7:00AM eastern time to 4:00AM eastern time on week days (as I begrudgingly go t school). On weekends it depends on my schedule. Ye or Ne ?

As stated previously, I'm bumbling through this like a blind person.
I think you're supposed to download that Hamachi thing Renegade listed, and then join the network I specified in one of my posts. I think I put the IP down there, as well as it's name, but I'll reiterate.
Hit "Join an existing network" under network. Type in "DesertSleepy" under the network ID part, and "desert" under the password part. If you do that, you should become a member of my recently made network.
5.221.49.212 is the Hamachi IP thing. Apparently you're supposed to enter that, along with :25565 and you should be able to join the server, provided I haven't somehow screwed this up, which is pretty likely. So basically, sometime tomorrow if I start the server, anybody who has become a member of my Hamachi network should be able to go on Minecraft, and add my server to their list (the exact address you'd enter in would be "5.221.49.212:25565") and then join. If I did it right.

I can get a server up for free if you guys want.
It won't have mods though really, the main reason because I'mlazy busy.
The choice is yours really though.

Did it host up to 20 people with no lag? If so, you are a network god among men.
Also, Hamachi doesn't recognized your ip you listed and I was not aware of the server ID and password thank you.
