Any good computer help sites?

Post  Desert Sleepy on 14th November 2011, 6:37 pm

Seeing as you're on the computer, there's a good chance you've had a computer problem before and had to search up an answer. I was just curious if anyone had any suggestions of which computer help site is the best? Having searched for some before, I've noticed that every fucking idiot who knows a tiny bit about computers feels compelled to start an entire computer question help site, where you might get one answer in a couple days after posting a question. For being a bunch of computer geniuses, you'd think these morons would pool together instead of making hundreds of thousands of tiny, tiny splinter sites. And since it often takes so long to get an answer, and since that answer is almost ALWAYS described very vaguely(the fucking morons on the site apparently forget that the purpose of the site is to help people who don't know shit about computers, and they skimp over the important details. They'll say, for example, "To fix X problem, just reset your IP settings, and make sure it's got a double DPS Hamfist gateway", and not tell you how to do that, so then you have to come back and say "What the hell does that mean? HOW do I do that stuff? I'm not a computer expert dumbass, I don't frequently do all this shit. You need to give details"), I'd like to minimize the amount of stupid computer sites I register to and just join ONE that's particularly good. I was hoping some of you guys might know of a good site. I've already tried the Firefox support site, but it found zero results. I even registered to their stupid site and asked it myself, but by the time I've gotten a response, it'll likely be just one incorrect response.

Computer problems are easily the second worst thing in the world. You have to search for your specific problem, finally find it, and then go through tens of pages of wrong answer after wrong answer, disappointment after disappointment. It's exasperating.

For the record, the problem I want to solve is that some window always appears in Firefox now all the time. It's just barely translucent, but I can't click the window, drag the window, or select anything on it. I've gone down the page of plugins and disabled each one to no avail. The window is in my top left corner now, covering my back button, thus making it a major pain in the ass as I use the back button all the time. It says:

CVR OFF(Long space here, have to put this so it doesn't auto-consolidate it)Audio Off
Brightness: 0(Another space)Zoom: 0

_______________________________

Ready

And it looks about like that, but slightly smaller, and set on a blue backround that's barely translucent. I can't click or select it, but I can still click the stuff beneath it (i.e. the back button), but that's difficult due to this thing obscuring my vision.

Lucky for me, my computer, without my permission, downloaded Chrome a few days ago, so I'm going to see if I can use that in the mean time (I tried using Internet Explorer, but for some reason, Internet Explorer is barely functional and practically useless).

Any good recommendations would be appreciated. Also, I'm trying to find a way to record Skyrim from my computer. I need some sort of free software to do it. I've already tried Fraps, but it only records for thirty second intervals, thus making for a shitty, cutty video. I've also tried some other suggestions from sites. "WeGame" or whatever isn't compatible with Skyrim, "gamecam" isn't compatible with Steam (which Skyrim runs off of), and the other one doesn't record audio. I'm going to see if I can record the audio separately, and then mix them together, but I'd love any good suggestions for video recording software. If you suggest paying for something that costs money, or suggest torrenting something that costs money, I'm going to hate you with every fiber of my being forever. Seriously, I'm not paying money for computer stuff, and I'm not torrenting it either.

Sorry for the long, irate post. I just hate computer problems.

I understand you completely. I am working in an IT internship atm, and it is hell even for me when I have a computer issue.

I found a site that has helped me before but, only in the way of the stubborn "google redirect virus". So, I don't know if your problem will be listed however, the traffic seems pretty heavy through the site so an answer should be pretty quick.
Here is the link: http://www.geekpolice.net/

Also, as much as I regret saying this, /g/ on 4chan is not a bad place either. They have quick responses and try not to be dicks if you admit that you are a pathetic loser or something like that.

In my opinion, I suggest uninstall and re-installing firefox. I know it sounds dumb and you have probably tried it before, however, with no visual and not a lot of experience with FF, I am doing my best.

Hope I helped.

Thanks, I'll be sure to check that site out. Also, thanks for not getting annoyed with my irateness.

I think the problem has kind of been solved now though, as I found out just a few minutes ago that Google Chrome has a better bookmarks system than Firefox or Internet Explorer (and it doesn't have that window), and I also like the shape of the tabs, so I've set it as my default browser. I was even able to just import all my bookmarks from Firefox.

But it'll definitely be good to have a registered account on a site for the next time a problem arises.

And another person joins the Chrome fan-club.

I do have a question though, what is the worst thing in the world if computer problems are the second worst?

If you're a Chrome user, do you know how to turn off this jerky scrolling thing? When I scroll down, instead of smoothly going down like I'm used to with Firefox, it jerks down. Is there some way to set that to off?

And the worst things in the world for me are cockroaches. They absolutely terrify me. They're so fast, and they can jump around, and they can fly, and they can get almost anywhere. I get the heebie-jeebies just thinking about that awful thththhththhthth sound their wings make. UHUHUGUUHUGUGHGUGHGUGH!

So much Chrome in here... jeez the shine is blinding me an- ah nooo, looks like the glare just set my fox on fire. Guess I can't go exploring the internet no more now, but hey, I can always attend the Opera instead.

(good to see the problem is fixed)

No clue. Also it doesnt always do that. Its a lag type issue i think.

@ Slacker, Chrome has some great download managers too, but Downthemall was what I used to use on Firefox, and it's still probably my favorite.

@ Desert-

The site is fairly graphically intensive and contains a lot of flash items. It's probably just lagging.

Firefox didn't do this for you?

No, Firefox didn't lag at all on this site. And I had looked it up on Google and apparently a lot of Chrome users are complaining about choppy scrolling, so I know it's not just my computer. I've gotten a bit more accustomed to it now, though.

I had the same problem before getting a new computer last year and I had the same trouble on all browsers.

Odd.
