There's a homeless guy that always hangs around the gas station that I fill up at, on multiple occassions I have given him pocket money, like 3-4 bucks. The first thing he usually does is go into the fucking gas station and buy clippers. Which are really shitty, cheap cigar/cigarette type things.

You can't help those that can't help themselves.

Yeah, but if it's somebody in their 20's with no visible problems, he's probably good to go.

eaustinn36 wrote:EDIT: @Sleepy - I would rather be homeless than drafted.

I would as well, due to the disrespect of a draft. I was something like 13 when I came up with that plan, and I came up with it as a sort of joke way to solve homelessness. I still think joining the army and such would be a good option to have available to you, but I wouldn't want to force it on anyone.

Especially since he's able bodied. Not all people have a hard life, they just happen to be lazy. Hard work is always rewarded.

For people like that man, all you can feel sorry and then move on. If you were to straight up give that man 1000 dollars... what would he do? Probably drink/drug himself to death.

Tophat said he didn't look drug-addled, so it would be incredibly unfair to assume he was. There's no reason to assume he's lazy or didn't get an education (as getting an education is mandatory anyway). The most obvious thing to assume is that he just fell on hard times and became homeless. And he wasn't asking for money for "F.R.E.E."(?), the sign said he wanted a job.

Education is not mandatory at all, one can choose to drop out of high school at age 16. Pretty sure nobody makes that decision for you. High school isn't hard, it's in a way a BASIC requirement for a decent life. If you can't put up with 4 years of people litterally SPOON FEEDING YOU opportunities, then you honestly haven't earned the right to work among people that did put in the effort to better themselves.

Each military branch requires a high school diploma or GED. So that's probably not even an option for said homeless dude.

Edit: You also have to take an aptitude test that you can easily pass if you are capable of breathing on your own.

Yeah, you can drop out at age 16, but not before about a decade of mandatory education, meaning education is mandatory. And what opportunities are "Spoon fed" in high school? A public high school, that is. In a normal area, not a wealthy area.

And again, why do you assume the guy has no high school diploma? It's pretty easy to get one, so why wouldn't he have one? It's not as though it's mandatory to be an evil, leeching scumbag to become homeless. It can literally happen to anyone under the right circumstances.

Pretty sure I got a diploma from a PUBLIC high school. It's the same diploma I would have gotten in any other high school. The opportunities that are being "spoon fed" to you are ... I don't know... a FREE EDUCATION MAYBE? The options you have after high school if you choose to apply yourself too. This guy obviously messed up. Which sucks. But even now it's not impossible for him to get back on his feet.

I'm assuming he doesn't have a diploma, because if he did, he probably DEFINITELY would be able to get some kind of work. Either in a supermarket or a fast food restaurant or something else.

We have it easy, we can fuck up so many times in life and still not starve.

For the record, I only brought high schools into the equation because I know some schools have much better programs available than others, especially private schools. And a free mandatory high school education isn't an opportunity, so much as a tool. Maybe his area is worse of than yours (I'm assuming so. Tophat and I both live in the same city, so assuming he saw him here, I live in the same area as this homeless guy). I've applied to at least five different fast food restaurants and four different supermarkets. I have a high school diploma (the "Advanced" one even, not that that counts for shit, but it must look nicer on an application), no criminal record, and I'm currently unemployed. The only difference I can assume there is between myself and this homeless guy is the fact the I have family to live with.

Woah this topic exploded.

Couple of things:

@Andrew - Your implying that all poor are high school dropouts? As i've said before in a different topic, your logic is seriously flawed. Take me for example: Everything I have comes from my job, including health insurance (only in America.. ), and money for rent. IF the economy hit tough times, and I lost my job, I would quickly be in trouble. With no job, I would instantly be dropped from all health insurance, and I would be "uninsured" (like a 3rd world nation). Also with no income I would most certainly eventually fail to meet rent costs, and become homeless.

So given this, am I some "high school drop-out" who never pursued an education? And I also did this to myself, and it is MY fault? If I apply to find a new job (but given a tough economy, noone is hiring), but noone will hire me, do I not deserve any money? I screwed up in life completely?

Also, what if I get sick, but cant afford health coverage, or see a doctor? Eventually, I need to go to a hospital, and I live, but have another $100,000 bill hanging over my head? What if I have student loans to (I actually do) that need to be paid, but have no more money to pay them? What IF I did eventually get a minimum wage job, but had so much debt, that every paycheck had to be turned over entirely?

SEE MY POINT YET?

And for the 2nd point (for the "couple of things"), that is why you don't give homeless money all the time. Go in a store, buy food, and give him the food. That way, you KNOW where your money is going.

It is truly sad because the problem is our parents world was much different. You went out and got a job made good money or went to college and made great money.
By 23 you were working, possibly married and thinking about having if not already having kids you could fully support, but times are different now all parents make their kids go to college for the most part and where as there was 500 jobs for say 1000 applicant now there are 500 for 10,00 applicants because of how many people go to college these days. Things like financial aid go to waste because the people who get it can't even get jobs after college and aren't putting back any money into the system.

Our parents don't understand that in this day and age our generation will live home till we are almost 30 if we want to be on our feet with a little room. Its a huge risk renting an apartment etc when you're young and barley employed if anything happens you could be completely screwed.

Our parents taught us to do how they did or didn't, but they could have never seen what has happened now. It is just a matter of everyone having the same idea and having to up the standards for even simple jobs.
