When you have nothing left...
I saw something today that definatly changed me.
Coming back from a gutter job i saw a guy, in his early 20s standing on the side of the road that said
''Homeless
everything helps
need job''
Its nothing new for me to see a homeless person, but normally they are much older and clearly have some type of problem, such as addiction. This man i saw had no visible problems. Hell, if he didnt have a sign i probably wouldn't have known he was homeless, aside from no having shaved in what looked like a week or two and dirty clothes.
But thats not even what made me think so much about him. As we went by my dad said
'' Oh look at that worthless piece of shit. What jackass would give him a job hahaha''
Im not really sure what the point in ths topic actally is but i just had to talk about this..
What do you guys think about this? :/

it means you're becoming observant of society's flaws. Which is a great thing for somebody your age (sheds ignorance and opens the mind).

Hm. Well your dad sounds like an ass for one. But, If he really needed a job he would go apply for one, instead of standing there begging.

with what resume' dude (he's probably not gonna have an address to list or a phone to call)? Being on the street in rags isn't exactly the best attire for picking up an app or going to an interview. However, he could be not as bad off or he could be...idk. I will say this much: for a man to stand on the side of a road and beg, means you've truly hit rock bottom (to the point where you will sacrifice your pride for survival/better living)

Re: When you have nothing left...
feel the need to post this again
So you make a little money
Off of somebody else's sweat
So some people starve a little
While you get fat
While you get fat
So you grind and grind
And you push and shove
And claim that those most worthy
Will get what they deserve
What they deserve
It can't be true
It can't be true
Because I've seen too many hungry faces
I've seen too many with the likes of you
It can't be true
For you everything has it's price
You give nothing away for free
If silence were truly golden
I guess no one could sleep
No one could sleep
You have money at your fingertips
People at your beck and call
And you're fool enough
To think for a price
You can have the whole wide world
For all our sake's
And all our lives
We must hope the words
That come from your lips
We must hope those words are lies
For all our sake's
And all our lives
We must hope the dreams
Soulless visions that you have
Are never realized
So
You've got a big house
And you drive a fancy car
So what if your pockets are full
If you have an empty heart
You snap your fingers
And all the waters part
So what if the people bow down
If they show you no regard
Your left hand
Always watches your right
So what if you trust in God
If you can't sleep at night
You think you've made it
You think you've got what everyone wants
So what if you're a big fat man
With an empty little heart
Who has made a little money
Off of somebody else's sweat
Who watched the people starve
While you got fat
While you got fat
You got fat
You got fat

Re: When you have nothing left...
I've only ever seen one homeless person before. He had the whole stereotypical cardboard sign deal going on, and it read "House repossessed. Wife left me. Dog died. Need money."
If I were him, I'd have stood around in the shopping center, which was a stone's throw away (A LITERAL stone's throw away, not a figure of speech. He was standing on the side of a crowded road, but the shopping center was about 40 yards away). The logic behind that is, people go to shopping centers with the intent of spending money, and they'd know he knows and feel guilty, whereas people don't usually have it at the ready on the road. The worst that could happen would be he'd get harassed by the securicart. I know security guards in theory can make citizens arrests, but in reality, it's one guy or woman (or two if they're lucky) who's completely unarmed and driving a golf cart with "Security" inscribed on it. Meaning they aren't worth considering, buzz-cut wearing wanna-bes-but-are-too-big-of-cowards-to-bes.
I had once (several years ago) thought of a "plan" to decrease homelessness. I called it "The Hobo Draft Bill", and it's exactly what it sounds like. I've since had a change of heart, and realized the army needs professionals, not draftees, let alone mostly older, often drug-addled and alcoholic draftees. But if I were this guy, I'd definitely consider joining the army an option. Even if he were afraid of risking his life, he could still join the Navy or something (not saying being in the Navy doesn't require bravery, but as of now, fighting two enemies without navies who don't have the best off-homeland attack record, it doesn't require too much. Obviously there are Navy SEALS and such, but I'm not talking about them, I mean jobs on ships, like waving those lights while jets take off and cooks and stuff like that).

Re: When you have nothing left...
Sorry, your dad's an asshole.
Going deeper though, all I can say is welcome to the unknown "lower-classes" of America. This is actually a far more common occurrence than people think, especially after the recession. A common stereotype is "all poor people are poor because they have problems or are lazy (i.e. drug addiction), but it is not true. There are many people who have done everything right, and still got shit on in the end. This America has always existed, and since the recession, has grown, hence why it is more noticable now. Granted I don't know for sure, but here is a potential situation that could've happened:
- Life was going fine. He has a job, apartment (or house), a car, and other things. One day, he was laid off from his job. He kept on applying to find work to match his college degree (area of expertize), but could find no work. Even smaller jobs were not hiring. Still on rent (or loan), he couldn't afford the payments, and had everything repo'ed. As time passes, eventually the unemployment checks stopped, as he was "dropped from the workforce", and he had absolutely nothing. As time passed, job openings came, but due to his lack of money and "homeless appearance", as well as poor presentation, he was not hired. He is now stuck in a vicious cycle, and getting out can be near impossible alone.
Anyways... as mboddz said, it's good to see you're noticing this at a young age.
EDIT: @Sleepy - I would rather be homeless than drafted.

Re: When you have nothing left...
Tophat your father is an asshole for one but I see where he's coming from.
Interesting, I saw a man outside of my work who appeared in his early 20s, holding up a sign reading the exact same message as the man you saw, who also was clean shaven but had a dog alongside him, a golden retriever. As I walked out, I ignored the man and he asked me if I had any money to spare.
I asked him if he was able bodied,
He answered yes,
I asked him if he wanted a home,
He answered yes,
I asked him if he really wanted a steady income,
Again, he answered yes.
I told him to go to a recruiting office and join the Army, to which he completely blew me off (Even if you aren't for fighting, there are a plethora of non-combative MOSs in the Army). If you want steady income and security, be a good soldier and you'll have housing, steady food supplies, and a life. If he doesn't want to help himself, then I won't bother. There is always a way out, especially if you're young and strong. I remember an elderly man who used to come by the house about ten years ago, a Hispanic man in his early to mid 60s, and he'd always be asking everybody if there was any work he could do for money. Not only that, but he was enthusiastic! He would gladly work hard for so little wage, but we always payed him fairly. He would go talk to the other homeless around here, trying to inspire them to work, while all they did was wallow in their self-pity.
We weren't the only ones that would give him work...
This will sound controversial, but if you've truly hit rock bottom, there are better ways to make use of yourself than wallowing around in your self-pity asking for a handout. I know if I ever have the misfortune to have that happen to me, I won't ask for one. Beggars CAN NOT be choosers.
Rather have steady income, secure housing, a brotherhood and a purpose than sit on the street asking for a handout. Unless you plan to actually make use of yourself akin to the Hispanic man.

Re: When you have nothing left...
Nothing at all wrong with joining the military, but alot of people don't want to do so. Though I'd rather be in the military then a bum. It's not hard to get a job people. A guy like what tophat described is going to get a shit job, true, but it's a job. I'd rather have some kind of job then begging for money. I was able to get a job at chik-fil-a when I was 15 years old. What kind of a resume did I have then?
If he has no family that'll take him in until he can get back on his feet, he needs to go to a homeless shelter or something so at least he has a residence. Then he can attempt to rebuild his life.
Also, why didn't he make an effort to get an education or make an effort at life like the rest of us have to? Why does he deserve to get money for F.R.E.E? Especially since he's able bodied. Not all people have a hard life, they just happen to be lazy. Hard work is always rewarded.
For people like that man, all you can feel sorry and then move on. If you were to straight up give that man 1000 dollars... what would he do? Probably drink/drug himself to death.
