The Transcendent Man

Post  Cry Vengeance on 5th April 2011, 4:49 pm

TRANSCENDENT MAN chronicles the life and ideas of Ray Kurzweil, an inventor and futurist that presents his bold vision of the Singularity, a point in the near future when technology will be changing so rapidly, that we will have to enhance ourselves with artificial intelligence to keep up. Ray predicts this will be the dawning of a new civilization in which we will no longer be dependent on our physical bodies, we will be trillions of times more intelligent and there will be no clear distinction between human and machine, real reality and virtual reality. Human aging and illness will be reversed; world hunger and poverty will be solved and we will ultimately cure death. Critics accuse Ray of being too optimistic and argue that the dangers of the Singularity far outweigh the benefits, pointing out the apocalyptic implications that once machines achieve consciousness, we may not be able to control them. Whether Rays controversial ideas incite excitement or fear, dogma or disbelief this ambitious documentary will forever change the way you look at life, death, and your own future.

personally, i wouldn't want to live in a VR instead of real life. None of the experiences/emotions would really be yours. Think about having your life governed by an AI. Does anyone else feel sketched out by that?

Yeah, I feel weird talking about it.

It would be like living in a dream, you wouldn't feel any fear, pain.We wouldn't have to worry about dying because we live in a anti-germ casket thing.
Kind of like this i guess? http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/File:FNV_Real_Mr_House.png
Not Mr.House, the casket behind him.

We would be just as human as the machines running the VR systems.

Though it gives me a cool feeling knowing that soon i can get my brain pattern copied to VR system,we are moving really fast technology-wise already. it makes me think where technology will be in the next 50 years. But I might be on a different planet in the next few years for all i know.

Whenever this discussion is brought up, I can't help but to think of the Instrumentality Project from Evangelion... now if that sort of singularity would be achievable, I wouldn't mind it at all (and those who do could reject it and continue living a normal life, though afaik, in Eva only 2 psychopaths out of the entire earth's population rejected it so it could get pretty boring...)

Buuuut, since there's no First Ancestral Race, Seeds of Life or other alien mumbo jumbo like that, it's useless to even think about it. Technological singularity? No thanks.
