Homestuck: Kids and Fun

What is Homestuck?

Homestuck is the fourth and largest MSPaintAdventure (MSPA) with currently 3000+ pages. It's a story told primarily through animate gifs and the occasional flash animation with entirely original music composed specifically for Homestuck. The animation and music are alone worth the read. The story is told as an interactive action-adventure with arrows that you click to progress the story. The comic is written by Andrew Hussie and is based on The Sims, EarthBound, and Spore.

Alright, but what's it about?

It's difficult to explain in detail without spoiling it. The best way to read it is to just read. To quote another Homestuck fan:

The major plot of Homestuck involves a group of kids playing a PC game
together. This game is ultimately found to control the fate of the
universe and the future of humanity. Throughout their adventure they
travel to all sorts of exciting locales, meet other doomed players and
discover friendship and adventure. The detailed plot has been planned
and designed to an almost autistic level of complexity with multiple
coincidental, divergent, and convergent plotlines. Lots of time travel
and alternate universes, but it’s kept at the right intensity to make
you think “Just one more page and I’ll see everything” while it just
keeps building up.

Ugh, John is dicking around in his room for five thousand pages!

Act 1 is a bit different from the rest. I'd not go into Homestuck expecting amazing plot and whatnot right off the very bat. Act 1 is incredibly hilarious and entertaining, but most fans find it a bit slow. Nonetheless, it's a necessary arc that's basically all build up for something greater. Keep reading. Trust me.

Do I need to read any of the other MSPAs?

No. While references and callbacks are occasionally made to previous works by Andrew Hussie, all of the MSPAs have completely independent stories that are in no way correlated. The first and second MSPA, Jail Break and Bard Quest respectively, are not even finished and never will be. The third MSPA, Problem Sleuth, is 1700 pages and worth a read of its own.

What else should I know?

We're currently on Act 5.2 out of 7. The story started on April 13th, 2009 and is updated multiple times a day every day. If you try to skip through the comic (whether it be pesterlogs, recaps, etc.) you will miss out on plot-vital and entertaining story-telling.

Some readers are a bit hesitant to read the story. It's pretty long, some would say it has a slow start, and there is information overload at some points. To that I'd say read it until at least the end of Act 2 with a flash animation titled [s] WV: Ascend. If you don't like the comic by that point, I'm not sure you ever will; it does get better all the time, however.

Here's a non-spoilerish plot summary:

Really, the most I can tell you and the real point of this topic is to just read it. Read and enjoy, it's an amazing ride.

KIDS
AND
FUN

And actually Eagle liked it first and you all should probably give him presents and shit for starting the obsession.

(I have no problem saying this because as it has been disproved multiple times, Eagle and I are not the same people)

Should we spoiler tag discussions, guys? On the one hand I'd rather not spoil things for newcomers

On the other, our discussions would be filled with spoiler tags.

I agree. Eagle showed it to me as he did all his IRL friends.

What the hell is this? It's just a kid dicking around in his room.

0/10, did not read.

That's about as fast as I read through it. Took me about a week, though I read most of it in a couple days and the rest over a week of schoolwork and whatnot.

No but seriously after knowing about it for a year I finally decided to read it. And I'm on Act 2, it's pretty interesting so far.

I disagree with the sentiment that it's too incredibly slow.

You can read it at your own pace. You are reading archives. It's all very entertaining, the location simply doesn't change.

Read it as fast or slow as you want, it's your choice.
