Champions Online jumping on the F2P bandwagon!
And it is glorious.
I'm a big comic guy, so when I originally heard about City of Heroes years ago, I was pumped. Every time I passed by an electronics area in a store, I gave the CoH box a stern, lustful glare. Unfortunately for me, my computer was, um, bad. So I couldn't play it for a while. I even bought the game at one point, after getting a better video card. NOPE. NO HEROES FOR FLASK.
When Champions Online was released as a successor to CoH, I felt even worse. Now there were two awesome comic book games that I couldn't play. Only this year, I got a better computer and played the trial for the game. It was but a glimpse of what I could have, as I was so broke.
Well, now Champions is going free-to-play in the first quarter of 2011, and I am pumped once more. Perhaps I will finally achieve the super glory that I have so patiently held out for? I think the answer...is yes.
This information came out a little bit ago, but this is the first I'm hearing of it, so I wanted to make a topic about it.

If enough UX members get involved, we may even be able to form a SUPERGROUP and go on fabulous adventures and missions! Yeah!
I hopped back onto the trial for the game to remind myself what I am waiting for. I made a totally radical dude, here. Magic + Fun = Mr. Laffable. (By the way, the shoddy anti-aliasing should be attributed to the game's graphics and not my amazing, beautiful computer.)

I mucked with the character some...and now Mr. Laffable has been reborn as Sir Laffable!

Oh, no, free-to-play becomes active in early 2011. From then on, it is a feature. Then, just like with other F2P MMOs, you can play the game with no charge unless you wish to get certain premium content.

I suppose it's possible. Contrary to what may seem like common sense, going free-to-play with MMOs recently has proven quite successful for multiple companies. It is my understanding that they actually see an increase in revenue, likely due to the multitude of new customers they draw in to eventually buy content. It's a nice trend we have here.
Anyway, yeah, once F2P Champions rolls around, I hope we have a group of interested people. I'd love to be a part of a UX supergroup. It's really a great way to see everyone's creativity shine through, as the character creation/customization in this game is one of the most fun and ridiculously extensive systems to date.
I'd suggest that anyone marginally interested in this game check out the free trial, if not for the limited gameplay (which is fun, but short in the trial), then at least for the awesome character creation.

Oh, and this is just to reassure anyone who has doubts about the look of the game due to my ZANY/WACKY cartoon superhero I showed you. The majority of creations will not be like that, most will be more traditional super-people or creatures. For example, a new guy I just made:

Yes, he's using the gun "power set". You get my point, I'm sure.
