Outbreak, Vladimir Kroskov's story

Post  Bladewind23 on 11th June 2010, 4:58 pm

(Seeing as my character brought up such a story about him, im writing a short story based on his experiences, enjoy. Oh and I just want to warn right now that this will contain a LOT of extreme blood and gore.)

Prologue

A silent and repeated clanging of metal echoed throughout the ship's bow. Vladimir sat in his room, cradling his smuggled gun and reading a small sailor's handbook. The ship itself was a massive supertanker, recently called for a delivery to Liberty City. They had no idea of the new infection that was slowly devouring the city before they left from port, in Vladivostok, Russia.

"Hey, Vlad, get yourself up, торопить, we'll be hitting land soon." The captain's voice rang through the intercom above Vladimir's head. He carefully hid the gun back under his mattress and took off for the upper deck.

Vladimir opened the hatch into the bridge and walked over to the captain. The captain himself was an elderly man, in his early sixties. "So, when exactly do we hit land, sir?" Vlad asked before briefly scanning the horizon. "It should be soon, ETA I would say is around five minutes, we should see the island of Liberty City any time now." He answered, he repeated this over the intercom to the rest of the crew afterward. Vladimir quickly left the bridge and made his way to the deck, he looked up at the sky where dark looming clouds were making their way towards the ship.

Chapter One

"We've got no response from any ground personnel, and worse we are extremely low on fuel." The captain muttered. A grave tone was apparent in his voice; Vladimir stood next to him, watching as the skyscrapers of Liberty City got even closer. Others from the crew were on the bridge, a few had an obvious look of fear upon their faces. "We have no choice, we'll dock up ourselves and see what's wrong." The captain continued as the ship was now passing Firefly Island.

The dock was scarce and abandoned, and smelled of blood. Vladimir stood on the edge of the deck, watching as they passed a few sunken boats and rusted crane machinery. A friend of his, Josef, was leaning on the rail next to him. "This should be the Alderney docking site." Josef stated calmly, he showed no fear physically. The boat slowly moved into a docking position, taking up nearly the whole site. The engines cut off and there was a long silence, only the waves padding against the concrete dock could be heard.

Vladimir looked across the abandoned buildings, there was not a single life form in sight. It was then that he noticed that there were many cars strewn across the roads, abandoned and some with bloodstains scattered across the windows and fenders. Josef was shocked at the sight, and he ran to the bridge to alert the rest of the crew. Vlad stayed, still observing the horizon. In a moment's notice he saw a few objects fall from the towering interstates above, they appeared to be human bodies. Vladimir's eyes became wide as he tried to see where they had fallen. He saw a few more run across the streets below, seemingly headed for where the fallen bodies were. "They must be going over to help them.." He said to himself, but he had a feeling this wasn't the case..

(More coming soon.)

Chapter Two

The rest of the crew had come on deck and also looked around, still no one left the boat. Vladimir headed for the stairs and disappeared below into the bow, only to return a few minutes later with his gun and five spare magazines. "Where in the hell did you get that??" Yelled the captain, pointing at the assault rifle in Vladimir's hands. "Listen, Voychek, things are not normal here, it doesn't matter where I got it, but I need it." Vladimir retorted, returning to the ship's railing. A figure staggered out from a warehouse not too far away. "Hey, you there!" Vladimir yelled out, the silhouette turned and looked at him. A howling scream echoed from the human-like creature and it began sprinting forward, straight for the ship. It fell off the dock and slammed face-first into the side of the hull, leaving behind a big patch of reddish-green blood. It fell into the water and floated, seemingly dead. A few crew members backed away from the railing and vomited after seeing the blood. Vladimir, Josef, and Captain Voychek all stood and looked down in horror. Vlad was the first the look up and notice ten to twenty more headed that way.

Vladimir caught one of the creatures between the eyes as it climbed over the ship's railing, blood poured from the bullet hole as the creature fell back and bounced off the dock. "What the hell are these things, some kind of zombies?" Josef yelled as he gave one a hard blow with a metal pipe. Most of the crew members except for the trio retreated into the hull. A few unlucky ones fell off into the ocean, only to be devoured by the zombies or drowned. "Just keep killing the damn things, we have to get off this ship." Vladimir yelled as he dropped a few more with select pulls of the trigger. Voychek had recovered a .45 caliber pistol from his quarters and was assisting in fighting them off. Josef began to lower the ramp onto the dock as less of the zombies came at them. As soon as it hit the ground the three began to retreat downwards. The rest of the crew would have to fend for themselves.

Four Hours Later...

The three of them were all covered in bloodstains and the smell of death. They had finally found shelter with two other apparent survivors by the names of James and Steven. The two were younger people and mostly kept to themselves. The shelter in question was in the middle of Alderney, a run down house with boarded up windows. Nightfall was looming and zombies were constantly surrounding the area, trying to get inside. Voychek and Josef were asleep in two rusty bloodstained chairs also recovered from outside. Vladimir sat in front of a fire that was lit in the middle of the room. James stood up from his seat and shuffled over, handing Vladimir a few pieces of bread as food. "Give the other pieces to your friends when they wake up." He muttered, returning to his post afterward. Vlad quickly ate the first piece, being hungry and tired from running through the streets. He kept his rifle in his lap, not wanting to let it get too far away. The sound of a vehicle engine was heard driving past quickly, none of them even bothered to look up, it was apparently normal to hear renegade people barreling through the streets at night. They were always driving souped up 4x4 trucks and vans with all kinds of obstructions and weapons stuck on them.

The night crept on and Vladimir was being overtaken with fatigue, the fire was still burning but shrinking by the hour. A few zombies were heard banging on the barricaded front door but eventually collapsed due to exhaustion. Others were seen pressed up against the boarded windows or staring through them, being enraged with any sound or movement that was made by Vladimir or the others.

(Even more coming soon)

Chapter 3

Sunlight beamed through the blood-stained (wow that word is said a lot.) windows, dark shadowy figures were still visible outside. Josef was awake and walking around, Vladimir and Voychek stayed in their seats and stared at the ashes of the used-to-be fire. "So.. what do we do now? Stay here and die?" Josef commented, an apparent tone of fear was about him. "I'm not sure, there really isn't anywhere to go, we're on an island." Vladimir answered, also in a state of hopelessness.

(I'll edit more into this later, I suddenly got a writer's block.)

(Continuing chapter 3)

Voychek suddenly awoke and was standing close to the fire. "We can't just sit here and do nothing, we're not going to quit like a bunch of bullshitters who talk crap over the internet." He walked over to the window and looked out of it, a hand on his forehead to shade his eyes.

Josef stood up next, he glanced up towards the ceiling, "Oi, you two, get down here for a second!" He yelled up at the other two occupants. They emerged a few minutes later, one of the scratching his head. "You two got any weapons we can have? We're going to get out of this fucking hellhole." Josef said, the two looked at each other with tense faces. "Yeah.. we've got a place.." They said together.

The metal doors on the large walk-in closet opened to reveal a very expensive weapons cache. The walls were lined with guns of all kinds. "I don't need a gun, just ammunition..." Vladimir said, grabbing multiple 5.56mm magazines off the wall and stuffing them in his coat. "Take whatever you like.. we've got plenty to go around." The two said and they returned to their room. Voychek grabbed a shotgun and a large knife off the wall. "You sure you're going to be able to use that knife old man?" Josef commented, laughing to himself. Josef grabbed two 9mm pistols and an MP5. "Quit your crap, Josef, and make sure you grab some magazines for those." Vladimir muttered, walking out of the closet and kicking open the back door to the fenced in backyard of the house. The fence was close to 10 feet tall and topped with barb wire. "Reminds me of the Cold War.." Voychek said to himself before he stepped over to the fence gate. He pulled off the lock and clicked open the latch.

A strange smell of something fowl hung in the air as the three walked outside, securely closing the gate behind them. To the front of them was a pickup truck that resembled a Mad Max car. They slowly made their way to it, watching the area with razor alertness. Voychek reached for the door handle and pulled on it, keeping his shotgun at the ready. The door opened with ease and there wasn't a sound from inside, Josef quickly checked the back seat and climbed in. Vladimir took the driver's seat and Voychek rode shotgun. The engine came to life and sounded like that of a muscle car.

Chapter Four

Sounds of an engine roared about through the Algonquin city streets, screams of infected were heard in the mix. A large truck sped by an alley through the streets and slid to a stop in Star Junction. Most of the grille and hood were caked in green-red blood. The engine idled for a few minutes then shut off, the headlights remained on. Vladimir stepped out and aimed his gun around, no infected individuals were to be seen besides a few gunshot-ridden dead bodies. Vlad leaned back into the truck and shut the door. "Someones been here.. lets keep going." The truck started up again and headed down the street, more infected were run over and bounced over the truck, further encasing it in blood and guts. Voychek rolled his window down and leaned out, watching the road ahead. One of the infected survived a hit and was clambering on the hood. He leaned his shotgun forward and took half of its head off, it squealed and fell off to the side. Voychek ejected the empty shell from the shotgun and returned to his watch.

The vehicle entered a thin section of road but kept speeding along, jumping a few bumps. An Infected fell from one of the buildings, unknowing to the trio. The body fell directly onto the windscreen. Shattering the glass and bending the metal bars that protected them. Vladimir yelled and the truck locked up and began to slide off the road. It clipped a telephone pole and a section of body panels ripped off, sending it back the other direction. The engine stalled and it came to a stop, smoke still pouring from the wheel wells due to the brakes locking. "Shit!" Vladimir yelled, Voychek and Josef opened their doors and stepped out, checking the area before turning to the fallen body. It was obviously dead and it was bleeding through the windscreen, they pulled it off the truck and Voychek put a shotgun round into its head, decapitating it. Vladimir struggled to get the engine to start back up again. It whined and chugged but it didn't turn over. "God damnit!"

(Chapter Four Continued)

Josef opened the hood to on the truck and inspected the engine. "The fuckin' thing is covered in blood, christ this is disgusting!" He called to Vladimir who was still sitting in the truck. Josef walked over to the driver side door, "Hey, Vlad, check this out.." Vladimir looked up and a piece of infected guts bounced off his shirt. He swatted it in fear, "Fuckin' hell Josef you don't know if we're immune or not, shit." Voychek shook his head in pity. "You two swear more than any human being I have yet to see." He said. The two apologized and went back to being serious. "Anyway, the belt seems to have slipped off the engine and some oil is leaking, but we should still be able to drive pretty far once I get the belt back on." Josef explained, returning to the motor and continuing his work.

Vladimir turned the key a few times and the truck finally turned over and idled. "Alright, Josef, get in." He said. Josef complied and the truck took off down the road. They heard faint gunshots ahead, Vladimir sped up, and the engine strained from lack of oil. Thin white smoke came from under the hood because of the now overheating metal. The truck emerged out of the narrow roads and onto a wide patch of highway near Helitours. A flaming helicopter flew past them and crashed into a crane, "The bloody hell was that?" Vladimir muttered, trying to see where the helicopter went. He spotted a few live bodies all from it and splatter onto the ground, the infected swarmed the bodies. "God damned savages.." Voychek said to himself, the truck kept going, now traveling north. The engine started to whine and pour black smoke, the wheels locked up again as the transmission gave out. It slid to a stop in the middle of the highway, "Fuck.." Vlad muttered and the three stepped out. Five nearby infected turned to them, one let out a scream and they all started running towards the three. Vlad unloaded three rounds into the chest of one of them. It staggered and fell over, the next one came at him and he shot it twice, its leg snapped off and it screamed again. The other two ran for Josef and Voychek, a single shotgun shell caught one in the upper chest and the head flew off, leaving the ribs exposed. Josef unloaded a few 9mm rounds into the other, and it fell to the ground. "You two and your gore-inducing weapons.." He muttered replacing the MP5 inside his jacket.

"We need to find a new vehicle, we aren't going to get far walking.. nor survive long." Voychek said as the three were advancing down the highway. "Well.." Josef started, "There's a few cars lying around here.. they just don't appear to be in running condition." He said, he looked around at the abandoned cars as they walked past them, one particular car caught his mind, it was an orange muscle car. "Hey guys, check this out!" He said jogging over to it. The other two followed with guns drawn ready for anything. "General Lee Zero One, even a Confederate flag on top, wonder who this thing belonged to." He said, he popped the hood and checked the engine. "Its in running condition." He said to the others, they checked inside and pulled out three dead bodies. "Wow, two dudes and one girl in the back." Vladimir said as they layed the bodies out on the asphalt. Vladimir checked the back seat then went for the keys, he turned it and the engine immediately started up. Josef closed the hood and got in the back of the car. Voychek sat in the passenger seat. Vladimir backed the car up and then took off once again down the highway.
